Infrared and traditional saunas are not two versions of the same heater. Infrared emitters direct thermal radiation towards occupants and nearby surfaces; a traditional heater warms the room, benches and a mass of stones, with planned airflow and, where permitted, water on the stones. The better choice follows from the bathing experience you want and the installation your site can support.<\/p>\n

The sensations are different<\/h2>\n

An infrared user feels energy arriving from panels without waiting for every surface and the complete air volume to reach the same state as a traditional hot room. Emitter position therefore matters: a cold area outside the radiation field can feel very different even when a display shows the chosen setting.<\/p>\n

A traditional sauna builds a whole-room climate. Higher benches feel hotter because warm air rises, the stones store heat, and a small amount of water may be used on suitable stones according to the heater instructions. Ventilation and room geometry are part of the experience rather than background building services.<\/p>\n

Do not assume one supply fits every infrared cabin<\/h2>\n

Some compact indoor products may be designed for a particular plug and circuit, while larger or outdoor installations can have different loads and protective requirements. Use the exact manufacturer’s electrical schedule and have the proposed outdoor supply assessed by a competent electrician. Extension leads and improvised adaptors do not belong in either sauna type.<\/p>\n

Traditional electric heaters also require a designed supply and controls; wood heaters require an approved flue and combustion-air arrangement. Compare the complete installation, not the absence or presence of a stove in the room.<\/p>\n

Infrared is thermal radiation, not ultraviolet light<\/h2>\n

Infrared radiation is non-ionising energy associated with heat. It is distinct from ultraviolet radiation, so a sunlight analogy can confuse more than it explains. Safety depends on the emitter’s spectrum, intensity, distance, exposure duration, controls and compliance\u2014not on the marketing phrase “far infrared” alone.<\/p>\n

ICNIRP explains that excessive infrared exposure can cause thermal injury to skin and eyes and publishes exposure guidance. Buy a complete product with documented conformity and installation instructions; do not assemble miscellaneous lamps or panels into a home-made cabin or move emitters closer to intensify the sensation.<\/p>\n

Neither type should be sold as medical treatment<\/h2>\n

Both can provide an enjoyable heat experience, but claims that a cabin detoxifies the body, cures disease, replaces exercise or guarantees weight loss require evidence beyond a product brochure. Heat tolerance is individual. Leave immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, confused, unusually tired or otherwise unwell.<\/p>\n

People who are pregnant, unwell, taking medication that may affect heat tolerance, or living with a relevant health condition should seek individual medical advice. Children require continuous responsible supervision and the product’s specific age\/use guidance.<\/p>\n

Moisture is reduced, not eliminated<\/h2>\n

An infrared cabin usually does not use water on stones, so it may receive less deliberate steam. Occupants still perspire, outdoor air still changes humidity and condensation can form on cold surfaces. The cabin needs suitable materials, ventilation, cleaning and a drying routine. An outdoor infrared product also needs a weatherproof envelope and serviceable electrical components.<\/p>\n

A traditional sauna handles more dramatic heat and moisture cycling. Its envelope, warm-side vapour control and ventilation are designed for that routine. After bathing, both types should be left clean and dry according to their manuals.<\/p>\n
