Fire is not a normal characteristic of an electric hot tub. The risk appears when high-current equipment, connections, motors or controls overheat, or when water reaches electrical parts that were badly selected, installed, damaged or altered. In an outdoor wet environment, repeated tripping, heat or odour is a fault report—not an invitation to reset the system once more.

Repeated tripping is protection doing its job
A trip can result from a genuine earth-leakage fault, overload, damaged component, water ingress or another installation problem. Resetting without diagnosis may re-energise the fault and erase useful evidence about when it occurs. Record the control message, which equipment was running, weather and recent maintenance. Leave the system isolated until it has been assessed.
Electrical Safety First advises using RCD protection for outdoor electrical equipment and tells users not to ignore burn marks, arcing sounds, blown fuses, circuit-breaker trips or equipment that feels hot. A hot tub is fixed, high-load wet-area equipment; its protective design must be specific to the site and installed by a registered, competent electrician.
Water flow protects electric heaters too
An electric water heater relies on specified flow and controls. A dirty filter, closed valve, airlock or failing pump can change the temperature around the element. Never bypass a flow or overheat device to keep the tub running. If a pump hums, circulation falls or a heater trips, stop and repair the cause.

Owner checks that do not involve opening an enclosure
- Keep equipment vents and the service space clear; do not wrap boxes for insulation or appearance.
- Look for water tracks, damaged panels, loose seals and cable damage from gardening, animals or movement.
- Maintain the filter and water level so pumps and heaters receive their designed flow.
- Preserve removable access when adding decking or cladding.
- Record unusual sound, smell, warmth or trips and stop use until the cause is known.
The installation starts with a connected-load schedule
Give the electrician the heater, circulation and massage pumps, filter equipment, lights, controls and every optional accessory. Include starting currents and the manufacturer’s connection instructions, not only advertised kilowatts. The electrician determines supply capacity, cable, protective devices, isolation, earthing/bonding requirements and test regime for the actual outdoor location.
A portable extension lead, indoor plug through a window or improvised junction box is not an alternative. Nor should landscaping conceal the isolator, cable route or equipment access needed for inspection.
What a competent fault investigation may need to separate
“The hot tub trips” is an observation, not a diagnosis. The electrician may need to determine whether the event follows heater demand, pump starting, moisture, one lighting circuit or a particular weather condition. Insulation resistance, protective-device operation, terminal condition and the manufacturer’s control diagnostics may all be relevant. The equipment should be cold and safely isolated before covers are removed.
Provide the fault history instead of clearing it. Note exact messages, time from start, water level, which functions were selected and whether rain, maintenance or a refill occurred. If a manufacturer safety notice or product recall applies to the model, follow its instruction rather than substituting a local repair. Keep serial numbers readable and update the owner file when a component is replaced.

- Final equipment and connected-load schedule.
- Electrical design, installation and test documentation.
- Control and heater manuals with model/serial details.
- Photographs of accessible cable routes and equipment before the terrace is closed.
- Record of later replacements or optional equipment.
