Sauna stones: when to check, restack and replace them

admin

Sauna stones are exposed to repeated heating, water and cooling. Over time they can crack, crumble and settle into a dense mass that restricts airflow. Maintenance therefore means emptying and inspecting the cold heater, not simply adding new stones on top.

Why heater stones wear

Stone expands when heated and contracts as it cools. Water thrown onto a hot surface adds a rapid temperature change. Existing weaknesses can grow into cracks, while small fragments and dust sink into the stone compartment. The pack can also settle and reduce the air route through the heater.

In an electric heater, restricted airflow can increase stress on heating elements. In a wood-burning stove, stone arrangement affects heat movement and the route taken by water. Dark colour alone does not prove a stone has failed; strength, cracking, surface loss and heater behaviour provide better evidence.

Choose an interval from use, not the calendar alone

Use the installed heater’s inspection interval and shorten it where use or observed deterioration requires. Harvia’s stone-care guide explains why fragments and tightly settled stones can restrict airflow. Its general guidance is not a replacement for another heater’s stone specification.

Inspect sooner when stones have settled noticeably, fragments collect beneath the heater or performance changes. Keep the appliance out of use for damaged elements, uncontrolled heating or other faults; rearranging stones is not an electrical repair.

Prepare the heater safely

Switch an electric heater off, isolate it against accidental operation and allow it to cool completely. Do not open electrical enclosures. A wood-burning heater must contain no fire, embers or hot ash. Protect the floor and glass with a clean, non-marking surface because stones are heavy and abrasive.

Remove and sort stones individually

Work from the top down without using heating elements as levers. Look for full-depth cracks, pieces that crumble by hand and severe spalling. Remove loose fragments and dust using the method permitted by the manufacturer. Do not bend or scrape electric elements.

If an element is distorted, split or otherwise damaged, do not restart the heater. Arrange competent service and use the correct replacement parts.

Use only approved stone material and size

Garden rocks and decorative pebbles are not automatically sauna stones. Composition, density and size affect heat storage, airflow and resistance to thermal shock. Use the type, size range and total mass stated for the heater. Ceramic decorative products or alternative stones belong in the pack only when that combination is expressly approved.

Restack for airflow

Follow the model-specific diagram. In many pillar electric heaters, elongated stones are placed more vertically and must not be wedged between elements; other heater types require a different method. Do not create a tightly packed wall or pile stones above the permitted height.

Check that control parts, sensors and safety guards remain unobstructed. For a wood stove, preserve the documented relationship between stones, firebox and flue surfaces.

First heating after restacking

Confirm that no tools or fragments remain and all guards are correctly fitted. Complete the first heating in an empty sauna following the manual, with the designed ventilation operating. Stop for persistent electrical smell, sparking, unusual noise or a fault message. Do not immediately throw a large volume of water onto a newly arranged pack.

Record the work

Keep the date, heater model, approved stone product and size range, amount fitted and observations together. Take a photograph of the completed arrangement for this heater after checking it against its manual. Record any part referred for service and the next condition check.

If the correct stones or loading instruction cannot be identified, leave the heater out of use until the supplier resolves them. Adding an unknown top layer conceals the problem rather than completing maintenance.
