Clear water depends on a complete system—not one product
Hot-tub water care has three separate jobs: remove particles, control microorganisms and keep the water balance within the limits required by the tub and treatment products. A sand filter, UV unit or chemical tablet solves only part of that task.
What each part of the water-care system does
1. Physical filtration
A correctly sized sand or cartridge filter captures hair, leaves and suspended organic material. It does not by itself make contaminated water hygienic.
2. Disinfection
An appropriate disinfectant controls microorganisms in the water. Chlorine, bromine and other systems have different operating requirements and must be used according to their label and the selected equipment.
3. Water balance
Test results determine whether pH, alkalinity, hardness and disinfectant levels need attention. Balanced water supports comfort, treatment performance and equipment life.

UV is an add-on to filtration, not a replacement
A UV unit treats only the water that passes through its chamber. Cloudy water, poor circulation, a scaled sleeve or an aged lamp can reduce performance. The unit should be installed in the flow direction and position specified by its manufacturer, with safe electrical protection and service access.
Because UV leaves no disinfectant residual in the bath, it cannot protect water that has not yet circulated through the chamber. The complete plan still needs particle removal, routine testing and a suitable primary control method for the way the tub is used.
A practical routine for private use
- Before use: inspect clarity and odour, remove visible debris and check the system is circulating normally.
- Test: use a suitable test method for the treatment in use; record results when several people maintain the tub.
- Correct in sequence: address source-water or balance problems before making repeated disinfectant additions.
- Filter: run the system long enough for the actual volume and bather load; clean or backwash only as its manual requires.
- After heavier use: inspect and test again. Cosmetics, sweat and organic debris increase demand.
- Change water when needed: do not try to rescue water indefinitely when it remains cloudy, foamy, poorly balanced or difficult to control.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Cloudy water
Check circulation, filter condition, recent bather load and balance. If testing cannot restore control promptly, drain safely, clean and refill rather than adding products blindly.
Persistent foam
Common contributors include detergents, cosmetics, accumulated dissolved material and an overloaded filter. Anti-foam hides the symptom temporarily; it does not remove the cause.
Green tint or slippery surfaces
Stop use, investigate algae or contamination, clean the surfaces and filtration path, and restore an appropriate treatment plan. An algaecide alone is not the whole correction.
Strong chemical smell or irritation
Do not assume more product is needed. Test the water, ventilate, verify the balance and consult the treatment instructions. A strong smell can indicate a control problem.
Water-treatment questions
Can a sand filter keep hot-tub water safe on its own?
No. It removes suspended particles but does not provide complete microbial control.
Does a UV filter mean no disinfectant is needed?
Not automatically. UV works only in the chamber and leaves no residual protection. The full treatment plan depends on the system and use.
Are 5-in-1 tablets suitable for every wooden hot tub?
No. Confirm the active ingredients, dispenser method, water volume and compatibility with the liner, timber and equipment. Follow the current label.
How often should the water be changed?
There is no safe universal calendar. The decision depends on testing, water quality, bather load, filtration and the ability to maintain stable control.
