Pellet-fired hot tubs: choose the fuel routine and controls

Decide which part of wood heating you want to change

A pellet-fired hot tub suits an owner who wants solid-fuel heat with a different preparation routine from loading logs by hand. The useful question is what work you want the system to do, and what you are prepared to manage yourself. Fuel storage, checking the equipment, water care and servicing remain part of ownership even when the burner meters its own fuel.

Think through an ordinary session. Someone checks the vessel and water, confirms that the heater is ready, prepares the fuel supply and uses the controls according to the supplied instructions. Later, the equipment needs the correct shutdown and cleaning routine. Decide who will perform those tasks and whether they can reach the relevant doors and components comfortably.

A more controlled feed can reduce repeated log loading, but it introduces a burner, control system and electrical requirements that need to be understood. If your main aim is the simplest possible fire-tending experience with few powered components, compare a conventional wood-fired arrangement as well. Convenience should be judged against the actual work involved at your site.

Choose the complete tub and heater together when making a new purchase. A standalone pellet burner is not an interchangeable accessory for any vessel with two connections. Existing-tub projects require a separate compatibility assessment of the vessel, water circuit, heater and controls before an installation can be specified.

What the current Pellet Comfort configuration offers

Its live selector offers two nominal sizes, 1,800 and 2,000 mm, and integrated or external smart pellet heaters. The selector currently provides four active size-and-pellet-layout combinations. Some descriptive material also discusses conventional log-fired versions, but these are not the pellet options being compared here. For a log-heated purchase, use the separately labelled alternatives and confirm that model’s current selection rather than expecting every older illustration to remain an orderable variation.

The smaller shell is stated for four to six bathers and the larger for six to eight, subject to the actual seating arrangement and product restrictions. Those ranges help shortlist a size; they are not a guarantee of equal comfort for every group. Review the bench, footwell and entry with the heater layout shown on the selected drawing.

Current choices also include covers, insulation, massage, filtration, lighting, liner finishes and exterior materials. These can alter the total price, power provision and maintenance work. Ask for a written list of included equipment and selected extras. Keep the heater controller distinct from optional smart controls for spa accessories.

Choose integrated or external heating before fixing the site

An integrated pellet arrangement keeps the heating assembly closely associated with the tub. Its access doors, fuel-loading position and service route must remain usable after steps, a screen or a cover lift are installed. It can present a compact overall arrangement, but the required working space extends beyond the visible bathing shell.

An external pellet heater stands beside the vessel with its own enclosure and connecting water circuit. It separates heater access from the shell, while adding equipment beside the tub. Plan the enclosure, connections, flue and operating route together. Moving the heater away from the bathing space does not make it a generic unit that can be positioned anywhere.

The Pellet Comfort technical drawings distinguish the working volumes below. Figures are approximate and must be confirmed for the ordered build; they are water volumes rather than a complete operating-load specification.

The integrated assembly also changes the delivered weight and handling requirements. Ask for the packed dimensions, permitted transport orientation and unloading plan for the exact configuration. Do not use a conventional log-heater example or the shell’s inside diameter to decide whether the delivery will pass through a narrow gate.

Specify the controls rather than relying on the word “smart”

Ask which burner, controller and software are supplied, where the local panel is located and which functions are included. Have the supplier demonstrate normal starting, temperature control, stopping and fault indication during handover. The right result is a system you can operate from its supplied instructions, with a clear contact for questions or faults.

The published pellet-controller manual describes a controller family with powered feed and ignition functions, operating stages and timer facilities. It also describes Wi-Fi as dependent on an additional module. Confirm that the delivered controller and fitted equipment match the relevant manual; the document is not proof that every listed function is included in every current order.

Separate pellet-heater control from the optional smart spa kits shown for air massage, water massage and filtration. A kit that switches an accessory does not establish the burner’s remote-start behaviour or its safety provisions. Put the required functions in the quotation individually, including any connectivity hardware and setup responsibility.

Ask what remains available from the local panel if the network or internet connection is unavailable. If scheduling is supplied, learn what it permits, what conditions can prevent operation and how to cancel a schedule correctly. A timer is a control function, not a promise that the water will be ready at an exact time or that checks can be omitted.

Provide the required electricity as well as the fuel

Pellets provide the combustion fuel; they do not remove electrical requirements from a powered feed-and-control system. Obtain the complete supply specification for the selected burner and its ignition, controls and other fitted components. Add pumps, filtration, massage and lighting to that discussion when they form part of the order.

Have a qualified electrician assess the final equipment schedule and outdoor installation. Do not assume that a wood-based heat source means an ordinary socket is sufficient, or that a convenient extension lead is an acceptable permanent arrangement. The required design depends on the actual supplied equipment and the site.

Ask how the installed system should be handled during a loss of power and how operation is resumed. Follow the particular shutdown instructions; stopping a combustion process is not necessarily equivalent to switching off an unrelated accessory. Owners should not change burner settings or improvise a backup supply in order to bypass a fault or operating restriction.

If a remote location has no established power provision, settle that constraint before choosing pellet heating. Compare the complete alternatives with the supplier, including their selected accessories. A product tag, a countryside photograph or an app description cannot establish that the finished installation will operate off grid.

Buy the specified pellets and keep the storage routine practical

Obtain the permitted fuel specification for the actual burner before buying a large quantity. Ask about the required pellet dimensions, quality and any limits stated by the manufacturer. Do not assume that animal bedding, barbecue pellets, loose wood waste or another convenient combustible material is approved for the heating system.

Store the permitted fuel in the dry conditions required by its supplier and the burner instructions. Think about the route from the delivery point to storage and then to the loading position. Carrying bags across a wet garden or through a narrow equipment gap can undermine the convenience that motivated the purchase.

Decide how much stock is practical for your use and available storage. Keep packaging information so the fuel can be identified if a feeding or combustion problem needs investigation. Inspect supplies as instructed, and ask the supplier what to do with damaged or moisture-affected pellets instead of mixing them into the hopper and hoping they will work.

Keep the loading area accessible and follow the supplied filling procedure. Hopper capacity, acceptable refill timing and operating duration belong to the specific heater’s instructions. There is no reliable universal number of bags per session or unattended burn time that can be inferred from the tub’s capacity alone.

Assess heating performance with a measured commissioning record

Choose the normal bathing group and working water volume before comparing heating claims. More water requires more heat for the same temperature increase, but the elapsed time also depends on starting conditions, heat transfer, cover use, weather and equipment condition. A metered fuel feed helps control the process; it does not make those other factors disappear.

During commissioning, ask the installer to explain the temperature measurements and the checks that establish readiness for use. A displayed set point should not be treated as a substitute for the prescribed water checks or product restrictions. Learn where the relevant sensors are and how their information is used in the supplied system.

Record a representative heating session using the agreed operating procedure. Note the configuration, starting conditions, fuel used, elapsed time and whether the cover was fitted as instructed. That gives you a practical reference for your own installation. It is more useful than transferring a competitor’s rapid-heating claim to a different shell and burner.

Plan ash removal, inspection and access for servicing

Automatic feeding does not remove the need for cleaning and inspection. Ask for the routine covering the burner, fuel path, ash areas, flue and control equipment, with the tasks an owner may perform clearly separated from servicing. Keep access to the relevant panels and components available once the surrounding garden work is finished.

Follow the specified shutdown, cooling and isolation instructions before any permitted cleaning task. Have the supplier explain what an abnormal sound, repeated ignition failure or displayed fault means for use, and who should be contacted. Do not repeatedly reset a warning or alter factory parameters simply to keep a session going.

Water management remains a separate responsibility. The selected liner, heater, pipework, filtration and massage system must all be compatible with the prescribed care routine. A stainless-steel grade or a clean-looking surface does not establish that every treatment is suitable or that testing and water changes can be skipped.

Agree the procedure for a prolonged break or freezing conditions with the supplier. Ask which parts retain water and what the approved shutdown or winter arrangement requires. A smart controller is not a substitute for a complete winter plan, especially where power, connectivity or fuel availability may be interrupted.

Compare pellet, log and electric ownership on the same brief

Use the same occupancy, working volume and installation location when comparing alternatives. The log-fired range may suit someone who prefers direct fire tending and suitable log storage. The electric wooden hot-tub range offers a different supply and operating routine. Neither comparison is meaningful if one price includes filtration and insulation while another omits them.

Pellet Comfort is most relevant when its fuel-feed routine and controls solve a real ownership preference and the site can support them. Compare the attention required before, during and after use, the storage space and access to service support. Avoid choosing on a single claim such as automation or low fuel cost without examining the whole package.

For an existing vessel, start with the standalone hot-tub heater guide. Supply the vessel details, working volume, connection arrangement and current equipment. A complete pellet tub in this catalogue does not demonstrate that its heater can be retrofitted to another system.

Put the operating requirements into the order

Request the exact shell size, integrated or external pellet layout, burner and controller identification, electrical requirements and fuel specification. List the cover, insulation, filtration, massage and lighting separately, together with any smart accessory controls. Confirm the delivery method, support requirements and installer responsibilities before production.

Include the manuals, commissioning demonstration, maintenance schedule and service contact in the handover. Ask the supplier to explain any differences between published illustrations and the current ordered equipment. A clear specification makes the promised convenience something you can assess and use.

Specify a pellet-heated hot-tub package
