What “four person” should mean in practice

Manufacturers normally use capacity labels to describe the intended seating range. They do not account for body size, preferred personal space or whether an internal stove occupies part of the tub. Four adults may fit, yet the same model can feel very different with children, taller users or a central footwell crowded by equipment.

Ask for the internal diameter or clear seating dimensions, bench depth, water depth and a drawing showing the heater. If the tub will usually be used by two people, a nominal four-person model can provide welcome room without the water volume of a much larger family tub.

Round or square layout?

A round tub encourages sociable face-to-face seating and usually distributes occupants evenly around a continuous bench. A square or rectangular shell can sit neatly against a terrace line and may provide defined corners or varied seat positions. Neither form is automatically more spacious: compare the clear internal floor and bench layout.

Also consider how the cover is removed, where steps can stand and which side the heater, controls and filtration connections occupy. A shape that looks efficient on a plan may be awkward if the service side faces a fence.

Choosing the heating system

Wood-fired heating gives a direct, traditional experience and can suit sites where a suitable electrical heating supply is unavailable. External stoves preserve bathing space and are easier to reach; integrated or internal arrangements create a more compact outline but affect seating, clearances and access.

Electric heating is convenient for controlled use and temperature maintenance when the supply is properly sized. Pellet systems meter wood fuel but commonly need electricity for controls and feeding. A hybrid arrangement can combine rapid wood heating with electric support, although it adds components and installation work.

Do not select from a claimed heat-up time alone. Ask for the chosen tub’s water volume, heater output and the assumptions behind any estimate, including starting temperature, weather and cover use.

For any combustion heater, plan how people will move around the hot surfaces and flue. Steps should not direct bathers into the service area, children need continuous supervision and fuel should be stored away from heat and sparks. Request the model-specific operating manual before the installation is finalised so required clearances are reflected in the site layout.

Four-person configuration choices

Wooden interior or smooth liner

A traditional all-wood bathing interior has a tactile, natural character and rewards owners who accept timber movement and a more involved care routine. Fibreglass and polypropylene liners provide a smooth surface and a broader choice of colours, while an exterior timber cladding keeps the wooden appearance.

Exterior wood species and treatment affect appearance and weathering, but they do not replace good detailing. Ventilation, drainage around the base and the finish-maintenance plan matter whichever timber is selected. Ask which components are structural, decorative or replaceable.

Water volume, insulation and everyday use

A four-person tub still contains a substantial volume of water. A fitted insulated cover limits heat loss and keeps debris out between uses; wall and floor insulation may further reduce energy demand. The benefit depends on how often the tub is used and whether water is retained or replaced after each session.

Filtration can support repeated use, but water must still be tested and treated in line with the selected system. Jets, bubbles and lights are separate options with their own pumps, controls and maintenance. Specify them at the quotation stage so electrical work and service access are planned together.

Ask where the filter is housed, how cartridges or media are reached and which components must be removed for winter drainage. A compact equipment box can look tidy yet become frustrating if it cannot be opened beside a wall. Leave enough working room for normal cleaning and future replacement rather than designing the terrace tightly around the new tub.

Heating and using the tub through the seasons

Outdoor temperature and wind have a noticeable effect on heat loss. A sheltered position can improve comfort, but the heater and flue still need the manufacturer’s clearances and unrestricted airflow. Keep the cover fitted while heating when the operating instructions permit it, and replace it promptly after bathing rather than allowing warm water to sit exposed.

Winter use needs an explicit freeze-protection plan. Pipes, pumps, filters and heaters can be damaged by trapped water even when the main shell looks empty. Decide whether the system will remain filled and protected, run on a controlled maintenance regime or be fully drained. The correct method depends on the equipment and local conditions.

For occasional use, record the normal filling, heating, water-testing and shutdown sequence so every adult operator follows the same process. Never light a wood or pellet heater before the required water level and circulation conditions have been established.

Base, drainage and delivery access

The supporting base must be level, stable and suitable for the filled tub, bathers, heater and steps. Confirm drainage before delivery: water should not undermine the foundation, flood neighbouring land or flow towards electrical equipment. Local restrictions and the chosen water-care method may affect disposal.

Measure gates, corners, slopes, overhead obstacles and the final lifting route. Record who supplies any crane or handling equipment and who connects the heater, flue, pumps and electrical supply. A few centimetres can decide whether the planned route is workable.

Photograph the route and mark its narrowest width, lowest clearance and sharpest turn. If access depends on removing a fence panel or lifting over a building, agree that work before dispatch. The order confirmation should also identify the final orientation of steps, heater and service connections so the delivered tub suits the prepared site.

Compare the complete project cost

Use the hot-tub price guide to compare quotations on the same basis. A lower starting price is not automatically better value if important equipment, delivery or installation work is excluded.

For meaningful comparison, ask each supplier to price the same occupancy, heater type, insulation, cover, filtration and delivery conditions. Separate optional comfort features from essentials required to make the tub usable. This prevents an apparently inexpensive base model being compared with a complete installation from another quotation.

• Confirm internal dimensions, water depth and heater position.
• Select the heating method from real utilities and usage.
• Choose the interior, exterior wood and colour separately.
• List the cover, steps, filtration, jets and lighting required.
• Measure the delivery route and prepare a filled-weight foundation.
• Agree drainage, electrical and flue responsibilities.
• Request the final configuration, exclusions, lead time and warranty in writing.
