Water volume and the temperature rise you need set the basic heating demand. Wind, rain, cold air, exposed pipework and an uncovered surface all increase heat loss. Planning questions depend on the whole project

A freestanding tub on an existing patio is a different proposal from a raised deck, a shelter, an outbuilding, a new chimney near a boundary or a holiday-let development. In Northern Ireland, householder permitted development is set by the Planning (General Permitted Development) Order (Northern Ireland) 2015, and applications are handled by your district council.

For example, decking or a raised platform is generally only permitted development where no part is more than 0.3 metres above ground level and it is not in front of an elevation facing a road. Check smoke control before you choose a site

District councils in Northern Ireland can declare smoke control areas, and parts of several council areas are covered. Do not assume that a hot-tub stove is an exempt appliance because it burns wood outdoors. Send your council the heater model, fuel and proposed position before fixing the installation. Wherever you live, burn only dry fuel allowed by the heater instructions, never treated, painted or glued timber or household waste, and think about where smoke will drift in relation to neighbours’ windows and gardens.

Base and drainage need a site-specific plan

Get the empty weight, water volume and support requirements of the configured tub, then allow for bathers, the stove, steps and equipment. Wet, sloping, made-up or clay ground needs particular care, and a patio that looks level is not proof it can carry a concentrated load without movement. Decide where the water goes when you empty the tub or backwash a filter before the tub is installed. Many rural homes in Northern Ireland are not on a public sewer. DAERA’s guidance on regulating water discharges explains that discharges of trade or sewage effluent to a waterway or to groundwater from premises not connected to the public sewer need consent under the Water (Northern Ireland) Order 1999. Write a frost and absence routine

Water can remain in the heater jacket, connecting pipes, valves, pump, filter and jets after the tub itself looks empty. If it freezes, it can crack components.
